Narita International and Tokyo International airports have announced trials of Face Express – a new boarding procedure using facial recognition technology.

Narita International and Tokyo International airports have announced trials of a new boarding procedure using facial recognition technology. The two airports will commence trials of the Face Express technology in April 2021.

Once passengers register their facial image in Face Express, they will be able to access and proceed through subsequent procedures at the airport (check-in, baggage drop, security checkpoint entrance, boarding gate, etc.) without showing their passport and boarding pass.

The introduction of Face Express is expected to speed up the boarding process and create a more seamless experience for passengers. Additionally, the touchless technology has the potential to reduce the infection risks posed by person-to-person contact.

Following the initial trials in April, the two airports are planning to fully launch the Face Express technology in July 2021.
