Zurich Airport enhances accessibility with Sunflower Lanyard for people with invisible disabilities

Zurich Airport and its partner companies have introduced the Sunflower Lanyard, enabling travellers with invisible disabilities to discreetly indicate that they may need more time or special consideration.

Zurich Airport and its partner companies have introduced the internationally established Sunflower Lanyard. The green lanyard with a sunflower motif enables travellers with invisible disabilities to discreetly indicate that they may need more time or special consideration.

Not every disability is visible at first glance. Autism, ADHD, dementia, epilepsy, and Tourette syndrome are examples of conditions that are hardly visible in everyday life but can pose a major challenge for those affected, especially in busy places. The Sunflower Lanyard was introduced internationally as a symbol so that these people can receive appropriate support.

“With the introduction of the Sunflower Lanyard, we are making a further contribution to greater inclusion at Zurich Airport,” said Ronny Roth, Head Passenger Operations, Zurich Airport. “This simple symbol makes it easier for affected passengers to communicate and provides our employees with guidance on how to deal sensitively with those affected.”

Anyone who would like to wear a lanyard can obtain one from designated distribution points at Zurich Airport. The offer is voluntary and free of charge for those affected.

To ensure the project’s success, employees of Zurich Airport and its partner companies have been trained. They learn how to approach affected passengers, help, and maintain discretion.
